Danny writes how he installed an Inwall 15†LCD touchscreen:
Part One: “What is a home automation system without a 15†inwall LCD touchscreen? Exactly! I don’t understand why a raw touchscreen monitor without the base and plastic costs more than a standard 15†LCD monitor? Solution, take a 15†LCD touchscreen monitor bought off of ebay and turn it into a custom inwall touchscreen… I choose a 15†NEC 1560v+ with integrated touchscreen because the viewing angles on NEC LCD displays are excellent. The screen will act as a digital picture frame when not in use and will also have built-in microphone and speakers via a 1 watt Canakit CK122.”
Part Two The Frame: “So I bought one that was made specifically for custom installations. For the frame, I ended up using solid Alder and created a profile I wanted using a Delta Unisaw.
I stained the frame a dark merlot to match my front door. I painted the back of the frame a flat black to act as a shadow. If you look at the following photo, you can see how I’m going to mount the frame to the wall.”
Part Three: The Finished Product “The interface is designed in Flash and communicates with a server I wrote in VB.net. The pocketPC interface I posted a while back is based on this full size interface. I currently have a pocketPC version, a 1024×768 version (for use with this touch screen and a 15†Viewsonic Airpanel V150) and a 800×600 version (for use with two 10†Viewsonic Airpanels V110).”
